Bystander Intervention for Alcohol-Serving Staff
For almost a decade, Make Your Move! Missoula has been training bartenders to intervene to prevent sexual violence. Alcohol is frequently used to perpetuate sexual violence, so bar staff play an important role in keeping our community safe.
During this training, staff will learn:
- How to recognize sexual aggression in bars
- How this issue impacts our community
- Workplace policies that help protect staff and patrons
- Strategies for safely intervening
This training is open to any establishment that serves alcohol.

Narcan and Overdose Prevention
Businesses and organizations can play an important role in preventing and reducing overdoses. Missoula Public Health staff provides free trainings on using Narcan and overdose prevention.
Participants will learn tools to prevent and reduce overdose fatalities in Missoula County. Topics include:
- Facing the Problem: An overview of the prevalence of overdose in Missoula and Montana.
- Understanding Overdose and Opioids: Facts about overdose and opioids.
- Narcan – A Life Saving Tool: How Naloxone/Narcan works and how and when to use it (participants will be given the option to take free Narcan)
- Other Tools and Resources to Prevent and Reduce Overdose Fatality: Local tools and resources such as Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD), treatment and recovery options, as well as other harm reduction tools will be covered.

Responsible Alcohol Sales and Service
All employees who serve or sell alcohol must complete a Responsible Alcohol Sales and Service (RASS) training and receive certification within 60 days of hire and every three years thereafter.
Missoula Public Health offers a RASS training to businesses and organizations. If you are an individual needing RASS certification, please check the Montana RASS Training Calendar for upcoming trainings.

Sexual Harassment Prevention Training
Are you looking for a sexual harassment training for employees that goes beyond legal language?
Our Sexual Harassment Prevention Training helps employees understand the line between harassment and safe, healthy, and consensual relationships. We tailor the workshop based on your industry and to the needs of your workplace. Trainings are best geared towards workplaces with young adult employees or where relationships between employees is common.

Suicide Prevention Training
We all can play a role in preventing suicide.
We’ve trained employees in a variety of industries, including local non-profits, retail stores, labor unions, and spiritual organizations. In fact, trainings for local businesses and organizations have been some of the most impactful trainings we conduct. Your organization does not need a mental health focus to benefit from a training for staff, volunteers, or participants.
Contact us to set up a suicide prevention training for your business or organization. We offer three different trainings that vary in length from 1.5 hours to 2 days, depending on your needs and capacity.

Trauma-Informed Approaches
Missoula Public Health offers a training on Trauma-Informed Approaches for child and youth-serving organizations.
The Linking Systems of Care (LSOC) Montana Trauma-Informed Approaches Curriculum provides in-depth training on policies and practices that
programs, agencies, and organizations can employ to be trauma informed. For those who work with individuals who have experienced trauma, understanding and employing practices that resist retraumatization is an essential step toward helping to facilitate growth.
This 10-hour training is broken down into eight modules, providing an introductory overview to trauma-informed care, and policy and practice recommendations for the following principles:
- Safety
- Trustworthiness and Transparency
- Peer Support
- Collaboration and Mutuality
- Empowerment, Voice, and Choice
- Equity
- Leadership, Administrative Support and Policies
Clean Indoor Air Act
Under the Montana Clean Indoor Air Act, all indoor workplaces and public spaces must be smoke free, including bars and casinos.

Safety Materials
Overdose Prevention
Businesses and organizations can play an important role in preventing and reducing overdoses. Missoula Public Health provides free Narcan and fentanyl test strips to help prevent and reverse overdoses.
Narcan is a life-saving medication that can reverse an overdose from opioids when given in time. It works to reverse overdoses caused by heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid medications. Missoula Public Health provides free Narcan (also know as Naloxone) and fentanyl test strips to community members, businesses, groups, and organizations (depending on supply).

Suicide Prevention
The Suicide Prevention Program at Missoula Public Health works to make sure fewer people die by suicide. We do this by working with community partners on projects that increase awareness, promote prevention, and support intervention.
To help with this, Missoula Public Health gives out free gun locks, medication disposal bags, and medication lock boxes. If your business or organization would like suicide prevention materials for your staff or clients, please contact us or fill out the form below.

Worksite Wellness Program
The Worksite Wellness Program offers free resources to businesses and organizations in Missoula County to help improve health and well-being. Our free programs cover mental health, staying active, eating well, preventing diseases, and more.
Besides providing health-related seminars, webinars, newsletters, and resources, we also offer help in these areas:
- Staying Active: We have fitness challenges, exercise classes, and bike-sharing programs to help you stay physically active.
- Eating Right: We provide workshops and ideas for healthy eating in break rooms, meetings, and events.
- Supporting Mental Health: We offer activities that focus on mindfulness, stress reduction techniques, and time management strategies.
- Preventing Diseases: Get information and resources to prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer through lifestyle changes and early detection.

Childcare Inspections
Childcare facility licensing is handled through the state’s Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS). Different types of childcare facilities have different licensing and inspection requirements. Please check with DPHHS to learn more.
Depending on your childcare license type, Missoula Public Health may conduct your pre-operational inspection or annual renewal inspection. Inspections are unscheduled, and you do not need to contact us to begin this process.
