Adopt a Pet from Missoula County Animal Control
Please visit Missoula Animal Control during operating hours if you would like to meet an animal and our shelter staff can assist you.
Adoption Process
1. Search our dog and cat pages for animals currently available for adoption.
2. If you see an animal you wish to adopt, complete the pre-adoption questionnaire and email it to [email protected]. If you have questions, call us at 406.541.7387.
3. We will review interest forms on a first-come, first-served basis. Our review process typically takes 1-2 business days, after which we will begin calling interested adopters. If the prospective adopter is no longer interested, or fails to answer the phone, we will move on to the next entry. During this phone call, we determine if an animal is a good match for you and your household.
We will discuss:
- The animal’s medical history
- The adoption contract
- Any pet supplies you may need
- Landlord approval if you are a renter
- If current dogs are licensed at your residents
- If multiple pet permits are needed if you currently have more than two dogs within the city limits.
If an animal you are interested in is no longer available for adoption, we will contact you via email.
4. Place the animal on hold and schedule an adoption appointment. If you decide to adopt the animal, we will place the animal on hold for you over the phone. Once your adoption appointment is scheduled, we will begin to prepare the animal to go home with you.
5. Complete the adoption and pick up your new pet. Your animal will be ready to meet you, and we will complete all necessary adoption.
Please Note: A completed application is required for all animals, regardless of whether or not you’ve met the animal.
Adopt a Dog
Dogs are available to meet at the shelter during the hours listed above. However, if the lobby is very busy a shelter attendant might not be able to bring the dog out right away. We suggest that you call us (406.541.7387) to schedule a meeting.
All dogs available for adoption are spayed/neutered. Adult dogs are up to date on rabies vaccines.
Adopt a Cat
The cat room at the shelter is open during the hours listed above. An appointment is not necessary to view cats at this location. Some cats are held at PetSmart on Reserve St., (2850 N Reserve St) and are available to meet during open hours.
All cats available for adoption are spayed/neutered. Adult cats are up do date on rabies vaccines. Kittens who are too young for rabies vaccines will go home with a discounted voucher on their adoption day.
