Adopt a Pet from Missoula Animal Control
Please visit Missoula Animal Control during the hours listed above if you would like to meet an animal and our shelter staff can assist you. All adoption proceeds go towards covering the expenses of animals in our care.
Adoption Process
1. Search our dog and cat pages for animals currently available for adoption.
2. If you see an animal you wish to adopt, complete the pre-adoption questionnaire and email it to [email protected]. If you have questions, call us at 406.541.7387.
3. We will review interest forms on a first-come, first-served basis. Our review process typically takes 1-2 business days, after which we will begin calling interested adopters. During this phone call, we determine if an animal is a good match for you and your household.
We will discuss things like:
- The animal’s medical history
- The adoption contract
- Any pet supplies you may need
- Living situation (i.e. homeowner, renter, etc.)
- If current dogs at your residence are licensed
- If you currently have more than two dogs within the city limits and a multiple pet permit is needed
4. Place the animal on hold and schedule an adoption appointment. If you decide to adopt the animal, we will place the animal on hold for you over the phone. Once your adoption appointment is scheduled, we will begin to prepare the animal to go home with you.
5. Complete the adoption and pick up your new pet. Your animal will be ready to meet you, and we will complete all necessary adoption.
Please Note: A completed application is required for all animals, regardless of whether or not you’ve met the animal.
Dog, Cat, and Small Animal Adoption Fees
Adopt a Dog
If you would like to meet a dog, visit our shelter during the hours listed above. A shelter attendant will bring a dog out for you to meet and walk. If the shelter is busy, an attendant might not be able to bring the dog out right away. We suggest that you call 406.541.7387 to schedule a meeting.
All available dogs are spayed/neutered. Adult dogs are up to date on rabies vaccines.
Dog adoption fees are $100 with a $20 licensing fee. All dogs in Missoula City-County limits are legally required to be licensed. Please see our Animal Licensing and Permits page to learn more.
Adopt a Cat
If you would like to meet a cat, visit our shelter during the hours listed above. To avoid the cat room becoming crowded, please call 406.541.7387 to schedule an appointment to visit. Some cats are held at PetSmart on Reserve St., (2850 N Reserve St) and are available to meet during store hours.
All available cats are spayed/neutered. Adult cats are up to date on rabies vaccines. Kittens who are too young for rabies vaccines will go home with a voucher for a discounted rabies vaccine at their next check-up.
Cat adoption fees are $75.
Adopt a Small Animal
Sometimes small animals come to our shelter, like rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, lizards, and more! We’ve even had goats!
Any animal categorized as “other” will appear on the cat page.
Adoption pricing will vary depending on the pet.
