Screens are everywhere, and for parents of young children, figuring out healthy limits can feel overwhelming. Missoula Public Health is teaming up with Hellgate Elementary School District to host a free showing of “Screenagers: Elementary School Age Edition” on Thursday, Feb. 26, to spread awareness about youth mental health and safety in the digital age.
“Screenagers: Elementary School Age Edition” is geared toward parents, guardians and caretakers of elementary school-age children and updates the original “Screenagers” movies with the latest research, expert insights and advice. The film starts at 6:30 p.m. in the middle school auditorium at Hellgate Elementary School District, located at 2381 Flynn Lane. A panel discussion will follow the film at 7:30 p.m.
This event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6 p.m. and free dinner will be provided. Attendees will also have the chance to win exciting door prizes. Activities and games will be held for kids in the gym during the film.
The film, co-directed and co-produced by Delaney Ruston and Lisa Tabb, addresses the challenges elementary school-aged children, parents and educators face in today’s digital world, including early exposure to online content, social media pressures, device distractions in the classroom, moderating video game use and behavior, and rising sleep deprivation among youth.
The film provides strategies parents and schools can use to encourage healthy decision-making, support child mental health, set limits to screen time and create healthy home environments.
